Understanding Hypertension:

Walk with a doc session by Dr. Srivaths - Hypertension management both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management

WALK WITH A DOC SESSION

Pearland, TX — September 20, 2026: Community members gathered at Tom Bass Park on Sunday, September 20, for a Walk with a Doc session featuring Dr. Poyyapakkam Srivaths, Pediatric Nephrologist at Texas Children’s Hospital and Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Srivaths delivered an informative talk on hypertension (high blood pressure), focusing on both medication-based treatment and healthy lifestyle choices.

Dr. Srivaths began by explaining how blood moves through the body's arteries and how the resistance within these blood vessels contributes to blood pressure. Using the analogy of a garden hose, he explained that healthy blood vessels are flexible, while blood vessels can become stiffer with age and other risk factors, contributing to elevated blood pressure.

He highlighted genetics, diet, and lifestyle as important factors influencing the risk of hypertension. Dr. Srivaths also noted that South Asian communities may have a higher risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, making awareness, regular monitoring, and preventive care particularly important.

A key message from the session was the importance of not ignoring high blood pressure. Dr. Srivaths explained that effective medications are available to help manage hypertension and can provide important protection for organs such as the heart and kidneys. He also discussed how stress and intense emotional responses can contribute to temporary increases in blood pressure.

Beyond medication, Dr. Srivaths emphasized that lifestyle changes are an important part of managing hypertension. He encouraged participants to stay physically active, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, and to make healthier dietary choices by choosing more natural and minimally processed foods.

The Walk with a Doc session offered community members an opportunity to learn directly from a medical professional while also encouraging physical activity and healthy living. Dr. Srivaths' presentation reinforced the importance of knowing your blood pressure, making healthy lifestyle choices, and seeking appropriate medical care when needed.

The event concluded with participants taking away practical information they can apply to their everyday lives as they work toward better heart and kidney health.

Healthy Feet, Healthy Steps: Community Walk with a Doc

Every Step Matters: Preventing Common Foot Problems

Community Walk with a Doc

Common Foot Problems You Can Actually Prevent

Date: Sunday, August 23, 2026

Time: 7:00 AM

Location: Tom Bass Park – Pavilion 4, Houston, Texas

Guest Speaker: Dr. Chandana Halaharvi, Foot & Ankle Surgeon

Topic: Common Foot Problems You Can Actually Prevent

Love to Share Foundation America’s Community Walk with a Doc brought together a small group of community members for an informative morning walk and conversation with Dr. Chandana Halaharvi, Foot and Ankle Surgeon.

Dr. Halaharvi emphasized a simple but important message: our feet are the foundation of our body, and taking care of them can make a significant difference to our overall mobility and well-being. She explained that many common foot problems are preventable with good everyday habits.

One of the key points of the discussion was the importance of wearing properly fitting and supportive footwear. The right shoes can provide better support and help reduce unnecessary stress on the feet, ankles, and lower extremities, especially during walking and exercise.

The conversation also focused on stretching before and after physical activity. Community members shared their own experiences and asked questions about foot discomfort, exercise, footwear, and stretching. The small-group setting made the session especially interactive, giving participants an opportunity to have an open and practical conversation with Dr. Halaharvi.

The morning concluded with a community walk—a fitting reminder that healthy feet help keep us moving.

We sincerely thank Dr. Chandana Halaharvi for sharing her time and expertise and all our community members who joined us, asked questions, and shared their experiences.

Turning Scraps into Sustainability: LTSFA’s Compost Education Workshop

Through hands-on learning and practical tips, LTSFA encouraged the community to embrace composting and build more sustainable everyday habits

If It Grows, It Goes! — Compost Education Workshop

On August 19, Love to Share Foundation America (LTSFA) hosted “If It Grows, It Goes!” at the Tuckahoe Area Library in partnership with CVWMA and NOPE Compost Co.

The workshop introduced community members to the basics and benefits of composting, including how food scraps can be turned into valuable soil instead of ending up in landfills. Participants learned what can be composted, how to identify certified compostable items, and the different ways to compost at home or through local drop-off programs.

A key focus was CVWMA’s Purple Cart Program, which helps residents easily recycle food scraps and reduce waste across Richmond and Henrico.

The session highlighted how simple everyday actions—like separating food waste—can collectively make a big environmental impact.

LTSFA thanks CVWMA, NOPE Compost Co., Tuckahoe Area Library, and all attendees for making the event a success.

Small scraps can make a big impact!

High School Intelligent Living Workshop

Intelligent living workshop

The Love to Share Foundation America (LTSF) High School Intelligent Living Workshop was conducted virtually on July 30, 2026 (3:00–5:00 PM CST) for high school students, with Sriram Ramanujam from Houston serving as the speaker.

The concept of this workshop was introduced by Mk Ramanujam who laid out the core ideas for speakers and organizers.

Prior to the event, interested students completed a registration form and a pre-workshop questionnaire that gathered anonymous feedback on their biggest sources of stress and what they hoped to gain from the session. These responses were incorporated into the presentation to make the discussion more relevant and interactive.

The workshop focused on practical strategies for managing stress and navigating everyday challenges through the concept of Intelligent Living. Key topics included understanding stress, identifying common categories of worries, and applying the Warrior Toolkit, which introduced six evidence-based strategies: Positive Reappraisal, Micro Action Timer, Gratitude, Values Compass, Worry Window, and Awe Switch. Participants also practiced applying these techniques to real-life situations through interactive discussions.

To encourage engagement, the session incorporated an opening discussion question, pre-workshop survey results, an Agree/Disagree activity using Zoom reactions, breakout room discussions centered around real-life scenarios, and an interactive Q&A. Following the workshop, participants received the presentation slides and a feedback questionnaire.

Overall, youth appreciated the practical, easy-to-implement strategies, interactive format, and opportunity to discuss stress in a comfortable environment with peers. Suggestions for future workshops included shortening the session to approximately one hour and providing additional time for breakout discussions. The workshop demonstrated that students value practical mental wellness tools that can be applied to academics, extracurricular activities, and everyday decision-making.

Healthy Skin, Healthy Steps: A Community Walk & Skin Health Talk

Walk with a Doc - Dermatologist, PA - Kruti Gandhi About Skin care healthy steps

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, Love to Share Foundation America (LTSFA) hosted a community walk preceded by an informative talk on skin health, dark spots, and hair loss by Kruti Gandhi, Dermatology PA. Kruti highlighted the common misconception that melanin alone provides sufficient protection from sun damage. She emphasized the importance of daily sunscreen use in preventing hyperpigmentation, melasma, and post-inflammatory dark spots, particularly in South Asian skin. The session also addressed scalp sun protection, especially as hair thins with age and the scalp becomes more exposed. Sunscreen was presented as a form of preventive medicine—an essential daily habit, much like wearing a seatbelt or brushing one's teeth. The educational talk, followed by the community walk, encouraged participants to take simple, proactive steps toward healthier skin and overall well-being.
