Walk with a Doctor Session Highlights Diabetes Prevention for South Asians
Pearland, TX — On December 14, 2025, a Walk with a Doctor session was held at Tom Bass Park, Pavilion 4, led by Dr. Bhargavi Patham, Endocrinologist at Houston Methodist. Approximately 10 participants gathered at 8:30 a.m. to take part in an educational walk focused on dietary practices for diabetes prevention within the South Asian community.
During the session, Dr. Patham explained that South Asians have a higher genetic predisposition to diabetes, emphasizing the importance of mindful dietary choices. She shared several practical and culturally relevant nutrition recommendations, including cooking rice a day in advance and cooling it overnight to convert starch into resistant starch, which supports gut health and helps lower the glycemic index. Additional guidance included incorporating chia seeds into roti dough to promote satiety with smaller portions, choosing protein-rich alternatives such as quinoa and edamame, and adopting simple lifestyle habits like eating cucumber slices before meals and engaging in light physical activity or household chores after lunch to boost metabolism.
The session was informative and well received by participants. Dr. Patham also expressed interest in conducting a future workshop focused on creating a healthy and balanced plate using commonly available foods. Love To Share Foundation extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Bhargavi Patham for her time and commitment to inspiring the community toward healthier eating habits.
