‘Anchoring Anger’ Workshop in Bay Area,CA

11 people assembled at the Evergreen community library in San Jose, CA on Sunday morning, November 16th 2014 with a goal to gain better understanding on one of the most fundamental yet one of the most complicated and potentially harmful emotion – anger. The interactive 3 hour workshop was led by Mr M K Ramanujam from Love to Share Foundation of America.

He started off the session by asking the participants to reflect on their last anger episode and note down the cause that triggered it, the underlying emotion and on hindsight, how could the situation been handled. The participants used the episodes they had noted down throughout the workshop to try out the concepts that were taught.

He then explained how or what causes anger, how people express it (the aggressive stance shouting, arguing, throwing things or the passive aggressive stance- “silent treatment”) and what the effects of anger are on the individual as well as on people around him. He made the point here that, although anger gives a clue about some perceived deviation from expectation or sense of right and wrong, if left unchecked, the same anger could cloud one’s judgement and deviate him further from the original goal. However righteous the anger is, no good comes out of it.

He also mentioned that any situation had four choices: blaming self, blaming others, understanding one’s emotions or understanding emotions on both sides. Typically, people reacting to anger choose option 1 or 2. Mindfulness will get an individual to Option 3. Option 4 is a stretch goal that one can strive for after attaining Option 3.

He then gave a four step process on how to be mindful when one got angry. The four step are Observe, Feel, Need and Request (OFNR). The first step – Observe, involves taking a step back and analyzing the situation and trying to separate the event from the underlying cause that triggered the anger. The second step – Feel, is to understand the feelings(fear, hurt, pain.etc) that are coursing through oneself. The third step – Need, is to recognize the underlying unmet need that is getting projected as anger. The final step – Request, is to know how to place a polite request based on the observation, feelings and need combined with an actionable item and not a demand to the other person.

The participants were then divided into groups of two to practice these ideas. Finally, two volunteers who were comfortable sharing their anger episodes, were asked to do so to all the participants and the whole group discussed how the principles that were taught could be applied to the situation.

At 12 PM, the workshop concluded and lunch was served. All the participants left on a happy note having learned anger management!

Youth Leadership Workshop in Dallas-Fortworth

Nov 23, 2013: The weather was gloomy, cold and shivering, perfect to cuddle in bed and spend the holiday weekend, but it was not the case for our enthusiastic 35 some families, who braved the bad road conditions to be bright and early to the Youth Leadership workshop, held at Harrington Public library, Plano, conducted by Mr. Ramanujam, fondly called Ram, who had come from India.

The workshop saw participants from last year who couldn’t wait to get started were thrilled to be there, while the new participants seemed enthusiastic and excited to see what was in store for them. Generally, parents dread the teenage years of their children, while it’s impossible to get even a nod from them, let alone make them open their mouths as well as hearts. Ram, here, on the contrary, knew exactly how to make the wandering minds focus and made them feel comfortable and participate. The participants readily took part in many discussions and expressed their thoughts and ideas. When young minds are inspired abundantly, one can expect wonders, which was witnessed by a panel of experts who were there to judge the impromptu skits, role-playing performed by the participants. Volunteers Mrs. Aparna, Mrs. Kamakshi and Mr. Sankar from the corporate world were pleasantly surprised to see the tremendous potential displayed by the young leaders in making.

Ram emphasized on principles that define a leader, like Priority Versus Importance, effective communication and the ability to follow O(Observation), F (Feelings), N (Needs), R (Request) in day to day life to bring the inner leader in each child.

Though the participants were busy enriching their minds, their growing bodies needed nourishment too; and the volunteers served the participants with lunch, snacks, and beverages after which the participants continued to absorb the lessons which are going to be with them for life and make them not only successful leaders but fine human beings.

Sunday Oct 13th – 10 am – 3pm

Love to Share Foundation of America invited Mr. MK Ramanujam (Ram) to conduct the Youth Leadership Workshop for teenagers in the Virginia. 29 young aspirants attended the workshop from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday, Oct 13th and gained a useful life skill to empower them to stand out amongst the rest of the crowd.

Mr. Ram’s unique way of connecting with the young minds resonated beautifully with the teens in attendance. The morning started off with some introductions, followed by the first module that dealt with principles and precepts of Leadership, the first of which was all about ‘emptying the cup’, a.k.a keeping an open mind and listening. The mirror principle and many other tips and anecdotes from Mr. Ram’s wide experience made it for a very enjoyable session. 6 teams then performed a wonderful debate on “Influence vs. Respect vs. Strictness” as the key qualities of a good leader. A young high school senior was a lone candidate on the Strictness, debated and gained 8 followers out which includes his opponent debater from Influence team. Ram lauded this student on his efforts of convincing the group as well as his opponent and clearly showed this act is actually called influencing.

The second session was on “Acceptance”, and “Responsibility”, that opened the bright young minds to a totally new way of dealing with problem solving. That was followed by a group activity that the children came up with to share their learning.

The post lunch session was on Time Management that particularly focused on how leaders think and manage their valuable time to best optimize their workload.

Finally, the young leaders each took turns to share their pledge for changes they’d put forth and practice in the coming weeks to better their lives and become wonderful leaders of the next generation.

Harmony in Communcation Worskshop in CA Bay Area

Mr.M.K.Ramanujam conducted a workshop for adults on “Harmony in Communication” on Sunday October 6th 2013 at the Tully Community Room in San Jose. 14 people attended the workshop and the workshop was very well received by everyone.

The theme of the workshop was on Harmony in Communication. Mr. M.K. Ramanujam began the workshop with a beautiful explanation on harmony and its existence in nature. He gave various examples of interplay of contrasting characteristics and their harmonious existence.

The main theme centered on harmony in relationships. Mr. Ramanujam explained about four filters that one has to apply in order to express oneself in a relationship. They are observe, feel, need, request shortly called O,F,N,R. By applying these filters, it is possible to get one’s needs met while respecting others. Generally discord in communication arises due to the following reasons: moral judgment of others actions, making comparisons, denial of responsibility and communicating desires as demands. Mr. Ramanujam went about explaining in detail about each of these elements which cause discord during communication and how they can be handled.

Making an observation not an evaluation, Sensing the feeling and distinguish it from thoughts, identifying the need and making a positive request – these were dealt in detail.

Mr. Ramanujam also discussed briefly about anger management using the above four filters. An interesting perspective he put forth was that anger is not bad; it is not to be suppressed.

The workshop involved many activities and examples to understand the four filters and how to apply them in personal as well as professional relationships. Overall, it was 5 hours well spent in understanding how to communicate one’s needs effectively without hurting others.
