Demystifying Self-Care - Practical Advice for a Healthier Life

SAMYUKTHA IYER, ATLANTA, GA

Maintaining health is a critical part of having a long and fulfilling life. However, when talking about being healthy, we often forget to think about our mental health, even though it’s just as important as physical wellbeing. Thus, as we approach the end of the year, here are some easy but impactful self-care tips to integrate into your daily routine!

15 minutes of daily movement, especially in nature

As the days get colder, it can feel less appealing to go outside, but something as simple as a quick walk after a meal or during a call is an easy but effective way to not only develop an active lifestyle but also give your mind a break from the same space and stressors. Fresh air and movement are scientifically proven to improve brain function!

Daily gratitude journaling

Cultivating gratitude is a very popular concept, and one of the easiest ways to have a more positive, grounded, and appreciative mindset towards life is through reminding yourself of the great things happening in the present moment. Writing just one or two things that you’re grateful for in a physical notebook every day is a simple way to achieve this.

Low intensity hobby

Many of us have hobbies and passions we cultivate, such as in the arts and sports. Sometimes, though, these passions can become stressful and higher stakes than we would like. Thus, it’s helpful to have a hobby that you enjoy that you intentionally practice without any external stakes or pressure, at your own pace and for your pleasure. This might be something like knitting or crocheting while watching a favorite show, or trying new recipes once a week.

Prioritize sleep

Sleep is the foundation of every dimension of wellbeing, and in terms of self-care, is a critical way to ensure that you have enough energy to make the most of your day’s opportunities with a positive and motivated mindset.
